Problems with large number of postings in a newsgroup
Hi Chris,

we have MPNews installed on our private internetsverer to run some
newsgroups.

Now some of our members told me that they have problems to see all messages
within the webinterface. I myself read the groups with Outlook Express, I
can see all messages. Now I opened the webinterface and really, there are
only 24 messages instead of the 51 messages that should be there.
Remembering a tip from Mark Carrington some time ago I stopped MPNews
service, deleted the history.idx and history.idx.data files in the
\data-folder and restarted MPNews, than stopped again and deleted the
overview.idx and overview.idx.data files in the ...\newsgroup-folder. But it
did not help in this case.
In the web interface we use the standard layout theme "Sky". Maybe there is
a bug there that it can not view more than a certain amount of postings or
not more than a certain total page length and does not split in two or more
pages?
Before we used the theme "Newsreader", maybe there this problem does not
exist, but we had problems accessing the website with the theme "Newsreader"
when our members used MAC-Computers or Linux-boxes. So we changed to "Sky"

Do you have any idea what we can do to fix this?

Thank you.

Re: Problems with large number of postings in a newsgroup
There should be no limites to number of messages.  We have customers with tens of thousands of messages using both newsreaders and web interfaces. So, it looks like an issue with the "master lists" as you suspect.

[Since you already tried some of this, try accessing from another Web browser (or clear your cache) to ensure that there is no cache issue on that machine.]

-- BEFORE YOU TAKE ANY ACTION, *BACKUP* YOUR MPNEWS DIRECTORY --

You can "reset" and reindex your newsgroups as follows:

1.  Create a backup of your MPNews directory
2.  Did I mention a backup?
3.  Stop the MPNews service
4.  Delete the C:\Program Files\MPNews5\Data\history.idx and history.idx.data folder
5.  Delete the contents of C:\Program Files\MPNews5\Search folder
6.  In the Registry, set HKLM\Software\MPNews\Cache Shutdown value to 0 (backup your Registry first!)
7.  Restart MPNews

MPNews will now rebuild all the indexes based on your existing messages on the server.  This will take very little time for a few hundred messages - give it 5 minutes before checking with a Web Client.

Also, I recommend that you reset the cache on your browser.

Regards,
Chris
