Accessing this newsgroup as a mailing list
To demonstrate the mailing list options, I have set up a mail gateway for this newsgroup.

To subscribe to the list, send an e-mail to <subscribe-beta@lists.newsgrouphosting.com>

To post to the list, send your message to <beta@lists.newsgrouphosting.com>

To unsubscribe, send an e-mail to <unsubscribe-beta@lists.newsgrouphosting.com>

Re: Accessing this newsgroup as a mailing list
Hi Mark,

Can I use a mailing list with a virtual server hosted at newsgrouphosting.com?

If so, I presume there must be some way to indicate which server and which
newsgroup.  Correct?  Also, how does this integrate with password protected
systems?

To subscribe: Send email to?  With what message?

To post: Send mail to?

To unsubscribe: ??

Thanks.

Yes, though this functionality is still in the early beta stage.

Each newsgroup has a separate mailing list, so the address the e-mails are sent to indicates the newsgroup the message should be saved in.

Because this is in beta at the moment, you can't set up mailing lists yourself. Just let me know which newsgroup you'd like a mailing list for and I'd be happy to set one up for you.

Also, how does this integrate with password protected
systems?

At the moment, having a mailing list for your newsgroup essentially means that your newsgroup is open to everyone. As this new option moves through the beta stage, we may attempt to integrate the mailing lists with the access control. However, this will be limited by the fact that a new e-mail message cannot be linked directly to a particular user as it will have passed through any number of other SMTP servers along the way.

To subscribe: Send email to?  With what message?

The basic e-mail address for each newsgroup (once a mailing list has been set up for it) will be the name of the newsgroup, with periods replaced with dashes, followed by "@lists.newsgrouphosting.com". For example, to post a message to "account.test", you would send an e-mail to "account-test@lists.newsgrouphosting.com".

To subscribe, add "subscribe-" to the start of the address, and to unsubscribe, add "unsubscribe-", e.g. "subscribe-accounts-test@lists.newsgrouphosting.com" and "unsubscribe-accounts-test@lists.newsgrouphosting.com".

Re: Accessing this newsgroup as a mailing list
Hi Mark,

Thanks for the quick response.

If you are open to suggestions, I have one about the password protected bit. Of course, you may have already thought of it. {grin}

If access is password protected, accept subscription notices only from email
addresses in the acceptable user list.

So, if johndoe with email address jd@mp.co.uk wants to sign up for ng1, you
would check (1) if johndoe is allowed access to ng1 either directly or through
membership in some group, (2) the incoming email has johndoe's email address,
and (3) the reply-to header is either empty or contains johndoe's email address.

A slightly weaker, albiet more flexible, standard would be to verify that the
reply-to header is the one in the database (and if it is empty, then the from
header).

You can then send a response asking for verification (very much like you do
now when someone tries to sign up for email notification of new posts).

Of course, after JohnDoe signs up, it would be impossible to ensure that
someone else is not spoofing JohnDoe's from header and/or reply-to header for
posts.  But, the above would ensure some security at sign up time.

You could probably do something similar at sign off time.
