Using Remote Administration
As all MPNews adminstration is done via a web interface, your server can be configured remotely over the Internet. To allow this, you must set up one or more MPNews users with administrator access, and you must allow access to the administration site through your firewall.
Granting users administration access
When you are accessing the administration site locally, i.e. on the same machine as MPNews is installed on, you can use any standard Windows administrator account to log on. However, for security reasons, this feature is disabled when you attempt to access the administration site remotely to prevent your Windows adminstrator details being intercepted.
To grant a user administration access, create a role named "Administrators" if it does not exist already and add the user to it. If this is done within the main MPNews administration area, that user will have full access to all the administration options. If it is done within the administration area for a particular virtual server, the user will only have administrator access to that server.
Allowing access through your firewall
By default, the MPNews administration site runs on port 1234 so as not to conflict with any other web servers you might have running. To allow access to this site from outside your network, you will normally have to change your firewall configuration to allow access to this port.
If this is a problem, you can change the port that MPNews uses for this purpose. Log into the main adminstration site and click on the "General settings" option. Click on "Admin settings" and you will be shown a list of IP addresses and ports that MPNews will accept connections on for the administration site.
