If you use Windows authentication in your MPNews installation, you are

Update: Web interface and e-mail notification fixes

- Fixed search form in default web templates for Safari
- Avoid unneccessary additional requests for authentication when using NTLM
- Suppress error messages when SSL client disconnects
- Added option to use https URLs for e-mail notification confirmations
- Do not send e-mail notifications to author of newly posted message
- Detect news: URLs with hyphens in host name
- Fixed intermittent error in e-mail notifications causing new messages to 
appear to be rejected

I am pleased to announce the release of MPNews version 5.

This new release represents a huge improvement over the previous version in terms of usability, performance and features.

Existing customers with a valid Software Assurance subscription will receive their free upgrade licenses over the next few days, while other customers will receive details of special upgrade pricing. An upgrade tool is included as part of the installation to help convert existing MPNews 4 installations to MPNews 5.

The main changes in version 5 include:

Simplified administration using new web-based administration sites

The old MPNews Management program has gone, replaced with a simple to use administration web site. You can use this to quickly and easily adminster your server from anywhere, with no need to install any special software, making it possible to change settings while away from your normal PC.

New web interface to your newsgroups

The web interface has been completed overhauled, including two new templates to give your users a more professional, powerful and easier to use way of accessing your newsgroups.

The new web interface is also written in ASP.NET, making it much easier to customize to your exact requirements than ever before. You can also take advantage of the huge number of third-party components produced for this powerful system to add on extra functionality to your web interface.

Better performance and administration simplicity with message storage options

The way MPNews stores messages has also been overhauled, giving you much improved performance especially when reading large newsgroups in the web interface.

As well as the existing options of storing messages in virtually any SQL-compliant database, you can now choose to store messages directly on disk without the need for a database at all. This gives you even better performance without the need for complex or expensive database systems, and makes it exceptionally easy to perform administrative tasks such as backup and restore.

Update: Upgrade utility fix

A new version of MPNews is now available to download from

- Fixed conversion of MPNews 4 data to MPNews 5.

If you have already installed MPNews 5 and encountered errors during the 
conversion process, you will need to manually re-run the conversion after 
installing this new version. To do this, go to your MPNews 5 installation 
folder, e.g. C:\Program Files\MPNews5, and run the MPS.MPNews.Upgrade.exe 
program.

- Prevent users from being added to user groups multiple times

- Fixed use of pull feeds with a "Forward articles to the remote server without storing them locally" push feed
- Fixed creation of messages in web interface using extended characters
- Fixed display of plain-text message editor in web interface
- Fixed selection of SQL Server connection type in database configuration

As part of this upgrade, all web sites used by the web interface will be upgraded to a newer version of the Infragistics controls. Any files modified as part of this process will be backed up with a ".bak" extension prior to being overwritten.

Update: Forums updated and added

I've made some updates to the forums to clean up some forums and add a 
couple new ones upon request.

If you are using a newsreader, please update your list of newsgroups. 
Notably the "support" groups were renamed to clarify what they are.  Sorry 
if it caused any issues for anyone.
